Why potassium is very important in our diet?

You often would hear someone would say. Eat bananas as it is rich in potassium.What is potassium? Why do we need them? What has it to do with us? Potassium is a mineral. It is important for a healthy nervous system and a regular heart rhythm. It helps prevent stroke, aids in proper muscle contraction. It helps in maintaining stable blood pressure.
Potassium is needed for hormone secretion.The secretion of stress hormone causes
a decrease in the potassium-sodium ratio inside and outside the cells and thus stress can result from an increase of potassium need in the body. Those people with kidney disorders and taking laxative and diuretics, their potassium levels are being disrupted. Tobacco and caffeine consumption can reduce potassium absorption. Potassium also regulates the transfer of nutrients through the cell membrane and this function decreases as you age, which may account for some the circulatory damage, lethargy, weakness, experienced by elderly people. Studies had shown that low intake of potassium can be a significant factor in developing high blood pressure.
Signs that your potassium level is low include acne, dry skin, chills, constipation,depression , insatiable thirst, fluctuation in heartbeat, high cholesterol, muscular fatigue and weakness, nausea and vomiting, periodic headaches, respiratory distress, edema, nervousness, low blood pressure, protein in the Potassium and magnesium together can help prevent calcium oxalate kidney stones.
Bananas are not the only ones that are rich in potassium. 
These include apricots, avocados, Lima beans, brown rice, dates, figs, dried fruits, potatoes, brewer's yeast, blackstrap molasses, raisins,spinach, yams, wheat brand, and yogurt.

Other foods that also has potassium are fish, dairy products, legumes, meat, poultry, vegetables and whole grains. Now that you know what's the function of potassium in our body, you can have a balanced diet for a healthful living.
