How to protect yourself from getting Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis Remedies

Many people don't know that they have diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is a condition in which the diverticula are perforated and become infected and inflamed. Diverticula is a grape-sized protrusion in the intestinal wall. So many doesn't experience symptoms or accept their symptoms as indigestion. It can either be acute or chronic.

Symptoms include cramping, bloating, tenderness on the left side of the abdomen relieved by passing gas or bowel movement, constipation, diarrhea, nausea and almost continual need to eliminate. There may be blood in the stool. Peritonitis- inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity, can develop if the diverticulum ruptures and intestinal contents flow into the abdomen.

Stress and smoking can make the symptom worse. The chances increase in developing diverticulitis if you have poor eating habits, gallbladder disease, obesity, coronary
artery disease and a family history of the disease. Because the wall of the intestine often weakens as a person ages, this condition is more on older people than younger people. It strikes between the ages of 50 and 90 years old.

The key to controlling this condition is to consume an adequate amount of high fiber diet and lots of quality water. Liquids aids in keeping the pouch-like areas clean of toxic wastes, preventing inflammation. Avoid dairy products, red meat, sugar products, fried foods, spices and processed foods. Eat low-carbohydrate
a diet with high levels of protein from vegetable sources and fish.

Do not eat grains, seeds or nuts except for well cooked brown rice. These foods are hard to digest and can cause bloating and gas. Eat garlic for it's healing and detoxifying properties. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables. They have a high source of Vitamin K and quite important for people with intestinal disorders. Also aloe
Vera promotes the healing of inflamed areas. It also helps prevent constipation. Diverticula typically form if an individual suffers from frequent constipation.

The diagnostic tests that help diagnose diverticulitis are barium enema and sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Last but not the least, do not overuse laxatives, they can irritate the colon wall.
