The importance of acid and alkali balance in the body

Acid and Alkaline Balance

I don't know exactly how to start this subject matter. Perhaps let's start how the acidity and alkalinity be measured in the body. Both are measured according
to PH. Water with a PH of 7.0 is considered neutral neither acid nor alkaline. Any substance with a PH of below 7.0 is acidic , while anything with a PH of above
7.0 is alkaline. The ideal PH range of the human body is 6.0 and 6.8.( the human body is naturally mildly acidic).

For the body, values below PH 6.3 are considered on the acidic side and values above PH 6.8 are on the alkaline side. When the body chemistry is overly acidic that condition is called acidosis and the body chemistry is, therefore, imbalance. The symptoms associated with acidosis include frequent sighing, insomnia, water retention, recessed eyes, arthritis, migraine headache, abnormally low blood pressure, acid or strong perspiration, dry hard stools, foul-smelling
stools accompanied by burning sensation in the anus, alternating constipation and diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, halitosis (bad breath) burning sensation in the mouth or on the tongue; the sensitivity of the teeth to vinegar and acidic fruits.

Acidosis can be of two classifications: Respiratory and metabolic. Respiratory acidosis can be a result of asthma, bronchitis or obstruction of the airway. it can be either mild or severe. While metabolic acidosis can occur due to diabetes mellitus and kidney failure and too much intake of aspirin. Other contributing factors can include liver and adrenal disorders, stomach ulcers, improper diet, malnutrition,
obesity, ketosis, anger, stress, fear, anorexia, fever, and the consumption of excessive amounts of niacin and vitamin C.

ALKALOSIS:
It's the opposite of acidosis. A condition in which the body is too alkaline. Alkalosis is less common than acidosis and produces overexcitability of the nervous system. Alkaline is often the result of excessive intake of alkaline drugs such as sodium bicarbonate for the treatment of gastritis or peptic ulcers. It can also be the result of excessive vomiting, high cholesterol, poor diet, diarrhea,
osteoarthritic or endocrine imbalance.

Alkalosis may cause calcium build up in the body, and in bone or heel spur. Some of the symptoms include: highly nervous condition, including hyperventilation and even seizures, sore muscles, creaking joints, bursitis, drowsiness, hypertension, night cramps, protruding eyes, night cramps, night coughs, asthma, chronic indigestion, menstrual problems, prostatitis, hard dry stools, thickening of the skin and too rapid
blood clotting.

How to do a self test if your body fluids are too acidic or too alkaline. Purchase litmus paper in the pharmacy. Do this before eating or one hour after eating. Apply urine or saliva to litmus paper. Red litmus paper turns blue in an alkaline medium and blue litmus paper turns red in an acid medium.

Recommended foods for acidosis:Apples, avocados, bananas, bilberries, blackberries, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, pears, pineapples, strawberries, and all vegetables reduce acidosis. Start with small amount of citrus fruits and gradually add larger amounts. Avoid animal protein especially pork and beef as they lead to acidity. Both cooked and processed foods tend to make the body more acidic. Also try to avoid eating late at night, as this makes the body work more on digestion and less on restoration.

Heartburn and indigestion can be the result of food digesting poorly. Do not use antacids or mineral supplements and cut back on megadoses of vitamins and minerals. Foods that are low in alkaline levels are almonds, brazil nuts, chestnuts, lima beans and soured dairy products and black strap molasses.

Your breathing can affect the acid-alkali balance in your body. Prolonged hyperventilation may cause temporary alkalosis resulting in anxiety and shortness of breath- as if you cannot get enough air although you are breathing. To correct this imbalance- breathe into a paper bag and re-breathe the air from the bag. This often helps to correct the chemical imbalance.
