Skin Truths Laid Bare – Eat your Way to Radiance

Contrary to popular belief, beauty is skin deep – that radiant glow or lack of it tells the whole story of how healthy or not you are. Your skin is not just an organ that protects you from external elements, feels pain and pleasure and regulates your body temperature; it’s also a mirror that reflects what you eat – healthy foods give you a lustrous look even without the application of cosmetics, while fatty foods loaded with processed starch, sugar and salt give you acne and make you look pasty and dull.

Your skin is elastic, and the more birthdays you celebrate, the less this elasticity becomes. Nips and tucks and visits to the plastic surgeon’s office aside, you can look and feel young no matter what the date on your birth certificate says – if you follow a sensible eating pattern throughout your life. Here’s what you need to do to get that glowing youthful look and keep it for a long, long time:

Do...

* Drink lots and lots of water to flush the toxins from your body keep your skin from becoming dehydrated
* Eat natural foods like fruits and steamed vegetables that help rid your body of toxins that damage your skin
* Eat leafy green vegetables that are rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins that slow down the ravages of age on the skin
* Eat lean meats, egg whites and fish that are high in proteins which repair cells and reduce the effect of aging.
* Eat foods high in good cholesterol and monounsaturated fats like fish which contain Omega 3 Fatty acids and extra virgin oil – foods that contain anti-inflammatory properties and help your skin retain elasticity
* Eat carbohydrates that are low in sugar content
* Eat foods rich in Vitamin A like carrot, spinach, fat-free dairy products and fish that repair damaged tissue and prevent dry skin
* Eat foods rich in Vitamin B like wholegrain wheat, cereal and green leafy vegetables that improve blood circulation and gives your skin that rosy glow
* Eat fruits rich in Vitamin C that help maintain the optimum level of the protein collagen responsible for healing bruises and cuts and for firm, healthy skin.
* Eat foods rich in Zinc like soybeans, mushroom and turkey that prevent your skin from sagging and developing wrinkles

Do Not…

* Eat foods high in sugar like chocolates and sodas as excess glucose leads to skin inflammation
* Eat foods high in saturated fat content because they age the skin much before its time
* Eat food that are greasy and laden with cholesterol
* Eat meals during odd hours of the day or just before you go to bed
* Eat spicy food in hot weather as this could lead to the formation of acne and skin inflammation
* Consume too much of alcohol and caffeine and do not smoke or do drugs

Skin care is not a one-time affair – it has to continue throughout your life if you want a nourished, healthy, smooth and glowing complexion. Besides eating the right food, avoid exposure to harsh sunlight, ensure that cosmetics are removed properly, and wash your face with plain water as often as you can.
