Importance of Plumbing

The first thing that I inspect when looking for a new house to live is the toilet because it tells to you everything about the cleanliness of the house. I am also very particular when using a bathroom and I want it to be clean always. The rest room and bathroom are combined in most houses so water should always be available. I have been living and transferring from different boarding houses and villas most of the time after high school until today when I worked as expatriate here in Middle East so I know house to choose a better place to stay.

Plumbing is very important when you build a house because it could help you save money or loss money depending on house smart you are in planning and choosing the right plumber to help building your house. If you use the right materials for plumbing and the right place in the building when embedding the pipes can minimize or prevent future problem and can save your time and money when you do some repair and maintenance. If you are living in Indianapolis then look for best Indianapolis Plumber to help build you home and I know that this plumber offers repair and maintenance to nearby houses and establishment. Kiwi Fruit is good for Hypertension

Kiwi fruit didn't become a fruit not until in the 20Th century. It was not until 1904 that it was recognized when a traveler went to Yangtze Valley in China and found inhabitants there loved this wild Chinese berry which they called "minhoutao" or monkey peach. As for others they described the taste to be a succulent blend of strawberry, banana, melon and pineapple all rolled into one.

Kiwi fruit is high in Vitamin C content and has a substantial amount of niacin and Vitamin E and low in calories. It has also a good amount of potassium that who suffer high, blood pressure and on medications can benefit this fruit. This is also good for a little more variety for those who wants fruit high in potassium.

There was one case that a person stopped taking his blood pressure medications and instead eat kiwi in the morning for breakfast, snack on them for lunch and nibble on them in the subway in the evening riding the subway home. He's on 4 medications,
but after 3 weeks on eating kiwi fruit, his blood pressure went back to
normal.

Kiwi is also good for common cold due to it;s high content of Vitamin C. Kiwi is a delicious aid for heart burns and indigestion as it has a wonderful enzymes that soothe the stomach. When you have such a heavy meal, try eating several kiwi fruits and it will help you relieve your bloated feeling, heartburn and acid indigestion.

How to treat minor burns?

Minor burns are caused by grabbing hot objects without realizing how hot they are or spilling hot drinks or boiling water. Most of these burns involve the hand. It's very important that hand burns must be treated more aggressively than burns on most other parts of the body because the hands contain delicate muscles and tendons in a relatively small area. If not treated quickly, permanent damage can occur.

Here's how you're going to treat them:

*Run cool water over the burn- This will ease the pain and even reverse some damage.

* Apply salves liberally-You can use several over the counter products such as petroleum jelly, shark liver oil or aloe Vera gel or if you have a plant of aloe Vera- obtain the gel part inside the plant.-They can be used temporarily to ease the stinging.

* Vinegar- most minor burns can easily be treated by dabbing the burned area with a piece of brown paper or paper towel soaked in white vinegar. In most cases, relief is felt in seconds. Once the pain subsides, dab on some antibacterial ointment that can be bought over the counter and wrap loosely in gauze.

* Monitor the burns very closely since burns are very susceptible to secondary infections. If it shows any signs of infection- go and see a Doctor.

Things to Avoid with Minor Burns:

* Ice - although ice can make a burn feel better, a burn packed in ice or immersed in ice water can make the injury worse. Warning- You can get a burn by grabbing very cold as well as very hot objects.

* Butter - the salt in the butter will aggravate a burn.

Black men and women

Our interpreter is a black man from Sudan and he is very intelligent person and very knowledgeable about history and literature. He speaks Arabic and English very well. In short he is proficient in both languages. He is also a funny man and he shares any stories and a website where he used to hang out in the Internet if he is not busy. He always visits the black bbw dating website because he said almost all of the members are black singles around the world. He said it is free to join and the website is easy to use too.

I told him that I might visit the dating website if I have the time using my Internet connection in the house. I also recommend the dating website to other black guys in my company and they like the site very much because of ebony girls that they met virtually and became their girlfriends.

How to manage stress?

"The more I did, the more I seemed to have to do. I felt as if I was on the verge of flu, but it never seemed either to turn into full-blown illness, or to go away. Eventually, after a good few weeks, I went to the doctor, and she said what I needed was a holiday, and she wished she could give it to me on prescription. "

"I was so worried about the money, but there was nothing I could do. I felt I couldn't worry my wife about it, so I kept quiet about it. She finally wheedled it out of me. It was such a relief. Telling her about it made me realize I'd got the whole thing out of proportion."

"I was on a short fuse with everything and everyone, and it was a sort of vicious circle, because then the whole family began to snap at each other. I couldn't understand what was wrong. I just wanted to shut myself away. But, then, when I was on my own, I felt as if everyone else was having a better time without me. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and not get back to sleep, and I was getting more and more tired. Things didn't start getting better until I realised that I had to change the way I was organising my life, and let other people take on some of the strain."

This booklet is aimed at anyone who wants to know how to cut down their stress levels. It explains when and how stress can be bad for you, and describes the signs to watch out for. It also provides helpful strategies for dealing with stress, and tells you where to go for further help.

When and why is stress harmful?

Stress is something we all encounter. Life changes, such as moving house, getting married or coping with a bereavement, can all cause it, while negative social conditions, such as unemployment, poor housing, noisy neighbours, relationship problems and difficulties at work, can also contribute. However, stress also has a positive side. A certain level of stress may be necessary and enjoyable in order to spark us into action.

Stress means different things to different people. A situation that is intolerable to one person may be stimulating to another. What you feel is determined not just by events and changes in the outside world, but how you perceive and respond to them. The important point is that you can learn to recognise your own responses to stress and, if necessary, develop skills to deal with it. In the animal world, the response to danger is to run away or to turn and fight. People respond to emotional stress as if it were a physical threat; rapid changes in the muscles and organs of the body are involved. Your muscles tense, ready for action and your heart beats faster to carry blood to where it's most needed - the muscles and the brain. You breathe faster, sweat more and your mouth becomes dry. These physical reactions are due to hormones that the body produces, including one called adrenalin.

This automatic reaction to a threatening situation is known as the 'fight or flight' reaction. It equips us to fight or escape from an enemy. You may merely be having an argument with a colleague, but your body may react as though you were gripped in a life-or-death struggle with a lion. Unfortunately, many people turn to cigarettes, alcohol or tranquillisers as a way of coping with stress. These may seem to help in the short term but, in the longer term, may further undermine your well being.

How can I tell if I'm under too much stress?

As stress begins to take its toll physically, emotionally and on your behaviour, a variety of symptoms can result. Check off the symptoms you recognise in the following lists. If you identify a large number of signs in yourself, don't panic! You're among those who can benefit from applying the principles and techniques outlined in this booklet.

How your body may react

* breathlessness
* headaches
* fainting spells
* chest pains
* tendency to sweat
* nervous twitches
* cramps or muscle spasms
* pins and needles
* high blood pressure
* feeling sick or dizzy
* constant tiredness
* restlessness
* sleeping problems
* constipation or diarrhoea
* craving for food
* indigestion or heartburn
* lack of appetite
* sexual difficulties.

How you may feel

* aggressive
* a loss of interest in others
* irritable
* taking no interest in life
* depressed
* neglected
* bad or ugly
* that there's no-one to confide in
* fearing diseases
* fearing failure
* a loss of sense of humour
* dreading the future.

How you may behave

* have difficulty making decisions
* avoiding difficult situations
* frequently crying
* have difficulty concentrating
* biting your nails
* denying there's a problem
* unable to show true feelings.

In ticking off your own reactions, you can get an idea of your characteristic responses to stress.

What's the best way to handle pressure?

Remember that a little stress is good for the body and alerts the mind. However, the methods of coping with stress described in this guide should enable you to deal more effectively with it.

Manage your time
Although we often plan for months ahead, it's also important to plan our days. Making time for leisure, exercise and holidays is just as essential as spending time on business or home worries.

* Everybody has a time when they feel at their best. Identify your best time (you may be a morning person or a night owl) and use it to carry out important tasks that need the most energy and concentration.
* Make a list of things you have to do on any given day. These are your priorities; everything else can be left until later. Arrange these priorities in order of importance, and stick to that order.
* Try to take tasks one at a time, until each is finished. If you try to do too many at once, you're more likely to end up muddled and accomplishing less.
* Variety is a good idea. If you can, vary your tasks in a day; dull jobs with interesting tasks, tiring jobs with easier ones.

Act positively

* Once you've finished a task, take a few moments to pause and relax. Remember to use your break wisely: do you really need that cigarette or cup of coffee? Why not eat an apple or try some deep breathing instead?
* In the face of unrealistic demands and expectations coming from other people, be prepared to say no. Practise being straightforward and assertive in communicating with others.
* At the end of each day, sit back and reflect on what you've done and what you've achieved, rather than spending time worrying about what still needs to be done.
* Try to make time to switch off from your tasks at home or at work. Use your free time to relax and unwind.
* A change of scene can help. Try to get away every so often, even if only for a couple of days.
* Develop an absorbing hobby or interest, one that is far removed from everyday stresses and strains; you'll be glad you did.

How can I overcome the ill effects of stress?

Sleep problems
Sleep problems, such as insomnia, are a common sign of stress. It seems that about one person in five suffers from them. Worries about personal problems, family, or work may make it increasingly difficult to fall asleep, and sleep may be disturbed by vivid, bad dreams. There are several simple measures worth trying if you want to establish a better sleeping pattern.

* Pay attention to your surroundings. If you are troubled by noise, use earplugs; if light from the street disturbs you, use thick, lined curtains or blinds.
* It makes sense to wake up at the same time each morning and go to bed at about the same time every night. Usually, if people get up regularly at the same hour, they will tend to become sleepy by a certain hour in the evening.
* It can be helpful to follow a night-time routine in order to wind down before bedtime. You could try going for a walk, listening to the radio or watching a relaxing TV programme, reading an undemanding magazine, taking a warm bath or having a hot drink (but avoid stimulants, such as tea and coffee, and heavy meals, late at night). Relaxation and deep breathing exercises can also help you switch off and prepare for sleep.

Many middle-aged and older people feel that they sleep less well than they would like, but people do tend to sleep less soundly as they get older. Physical discomfort or pain will certainly affect sleep, but it's worth noting that drugs prescribed for an illness may also cause insomnia.

Underlying emotional problems can make people much more vulnerable to stress. Depression may make it difficult for you to get to sleep, or you may find you wake very early feeling particularly depressed and anxious. Consider contacting your GP to discuss your sleep problem. Alternatively, if you wish to explore any underlying reasons, you could consider counselling. .

The holistic approach to healthcare emphasises the need to look at the whole person and not just their problems, and this can also be very helpful for stress-related symptoms. Many practitioners of alternative and complementary medicine take a holistic approach. Meditation, massage and autogenics can all help relieve stress disorders and promote relaxation.

How can I help myself to relax?

Relaxation is the natural answer to stress. Each and every one of us should make time in the day to relax, whether we feel under stress, or not. The following techniques can help.

Deep breathing
The way you breathe can have a dramatic effect on your sense of well being. Many people breathe poorly, without even realising it. This is especially true of people under stress. To improve the way you breathe, try this simple exercise for just five minutes a day. It can help relieve tension, anxiety, dizziness, pins and needles, cramps and chest pains.

Don't be concerned if these breathing exercises aren't for you. Not everyone feels comfortable focusing on their breathing, and if this is the case, there's no need to pursue it.

* Sit down, or lie down on your back. Make sure you are comfortable, and loosen any tight clothing.
* Become aware of your breathing, its rhythm, depth or shallowness, and its speed.
* Put one hand on your upper chest and one just below your ribs on your abdomen.
* Slowly let out your breath.
* Gently breathe in, so that you feel your abdomen rise slowly under your hand.
* Breathe out again, feeling your abdomen fall, and make sure you exhale a little longer than you inhaled.
* Pause for a few moments and then repeat the process again.

If you find that only the hand on your abdomen moves, then you are breathing correctly; the abdomen is moving as your diaphragm rises and falls rhythmically. There should be little or no movement in your upper chest; your hand should stay still.

Simple relaxation
Try this every now and again, especially when you feel under pressure. It should take you no more than five to ten minutes.

* Have a stretch. Then let your shoulders and arms relax into a comfortable position. Shrugging, wriggling and shaking all help your muscles to stop tensing and to relax.
* Ease off the tension in your feet, ankles, calves, knees, thighs, chest, arms and neck.
* If you are sitting in a chair, or on the floor, allow yourself to feel as if the chair or the floor is supporting your whole weight; feel yourself letting go.
* Try to be peaceful; loosen your jaw and face. A bland expression will help your face muscles to relax.
* Follow the breathing technique described above.
* Close your eyes and imagine a peaceful scene, such as an exotic desert island, the shady depths of a forest, or sunlight glistening on a lake.
* Choose your own special place, whatever seems most restful to you. Then for a few moments, imagine that you are really there.

What else can I do to reduce my stress levels?

Physical activity is an important means of reducing stress levels and preventing some of its damaging effects on the body. Exercise uses up the adrenalin and other hormones that the body produces under stress, and relaxes the muscles. It will help to strengthen the heart and improve blood circulation too.

Research suggests that physical activity can lead to a change in body chemistry that can affect the way people feel, as well as their physical condition. And that's not all. Exercise can also help to raise self-esteem and reduce anxiety and depression.

You don't necessarily have to take up a competitive or vigorous new sport. Remember that you can benefit simply by becoming more active, as part of your daily routine. So, walk to the shops, don't drive, climb the stairs, don't use the lift, cultivate your garden, don't just sit there!

Healthy eating
When things get too hectic or difficult, and you feel under stress, it's often easy to forget about what you eat; it just doesn't seem important, or there isn't time. But what we eat, and when we eat, can make a big difference. It's important to make time for regular food or snacks and not to miss out on meals, such as breakfast. Try not to rush; take time to enjoy what you're eating.

Choose a good variety of foods, making sure you have a balance of protein (from meat, fish, nuts or cheese), starch (from bread, potatoes, pasta and rice) and fibre (cereal and wholemeal bread). Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (a minimum of five portions a day). Finally, cut down on saturated fat (from dairy products), sugary foods and salt.

Having fun
Making time for regular leisure activities can help you release the tension that stress can cause, and to take your mind off the worries of the day. Whether you unwind by soaking in a hot bath, browsing through your favourite books, listening to music, gardening or taking photographs, the important point is to enjoy the activity as an end in itself, purely for the pleasure of the moment.

Chatting Room for Disable

My friend who is now a nurse shared me a story last week about his patient who is in his wheelchair all his life. He said that his old patient has a very positive outlook in life even if he is confined to the wheelchair for a long time. He did not let his physical impediment to stop him from doing anything. In fact he still manages his business with the help of his son. Many people lost their confidence when some problems like this arise; they think that it is the end of the world. He is also into Internet to meet new people online and share how he overcame anxiety and live a normal despite being in the wheelchair for a long time. Of course he said that he missed many of his activities before like playing golf and surfing but life has to go on as what most of the people said.

My friend found a website that is a chatting website at the same time and he recommended it to his patient because he knew that the old man like to chat. The site according to my friend is free and there is also capable of webcam and headphone so when you chat you could chat the other members same as the other chatting website but the difference is that this chatting website has many disable members. At disabled chat you could interact with disable people like you and share your life and experience. His patient is proud because he could be one of the pioneer in this website that is offering people to chat.

Reasons to Remodel your House

Remodeling a house is common today because most people want to save money. Since the recession is still around, many people are pessimistic to buy their new dream house because they do not want to be tied with debts which many people are facing today. My classmate in high school who lives in California once bragged her beautiful house and even posts it in her Friendster profile but now she is silence I do not know if she still lived there with her family because as I heard her husband is now earning a minimum salary. She is just one of the thousands or maybe millions of people who is affected by this so called recession. When recession stroke, many people are affected because many companies are losing their money due to less demand of their products.

One of the most affected businesses is real estate because many people applied for mortgage believing that they can afford to pay their loans. Buying a new house today is not practical and in fact very dangerous. Remodeling your existing home is the best answer especially if you have the money to finance it. Remodeling will save you money because you do not need to pay for the lot area since you have the house already. Planning is very important though to avoid shortage of money when you remodel the house. You can also apply for loan to refinance your house if you have no money but of course remodeling a house is much cheaper than building a house and it is a fact.

Dallas Remodeling Contractor is the best in Texas because they have the experience and expertise. The good thing about remodeling is that it can add value to your house. If you want to sell it later you can price it higher than before.

Why Henry Sy believes the Philippines is not hopeless

"I am optimistic that we can achieve a better future. It's not true that the Philippines is a hopeless case," 82-year-old SM Group and Banco de Oro founder
Henry Sy recently told The Philippine STAR. "I'm an immigrant who came here at 12 years old, spoke no English or Tagalog, but I came to appreciate the natural beauty and many economic advantages of the Philippines more than many other people do, and I kept working and investing with positive thinking."

The exclusive three-hour interview took place at his simple but elegant bungalow in North Forbes Park, Makati City, and at Tanabe Japanese Restaurant in his
SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
In the over two decades I have known the legendary rags-to-riches taipan and shopping-mall pioneer, Henry Sy has become more mentally sharp and energetic than ever before. He is strong despite his weak knees, which occasionally forced him to use the wheelchair when we briefly toured his newest pride and passion - the SM Mall of Asia.

PHILIPPINE STAR: Congratulations on the success of the SM Mall of Asia. What did your competitors say about your biggest shopping-mall project yet?

HENRY SY: I called Robinsons mall boss John Gokongwei Jr. to personally invite him to the blessing of the SM Mall of Asia, but he said he couldn't make it. Even though we are competitors, I don't think Gokongwei has any complaints about me.

Your executives tell me that one million people came to the SM Mall of Asia on your first day, May 21, then 400,000 came the next day, Monday. Why are people coming here, when this location is not along a highway like SM Megamall or at a crossroads like SM North Edsa?

A lot of the customers to this mall came from the provinces - they enjoy touring the place. It's not only constructing the place that creates a good mall, we at SM create destinations using continuous research, studies and new ideas to match the needs and
wants of the people. Doing a mall is not only construction of the physical place, what's important is the merchandising mix. We strive to serve the convenience of the public. We want shopping at our malls to be a unique and an enjoyable experience.

Why did you build an Olympic-size ice-skating rink in this mall?

Very few people know this: I love skating and bowling. I used to roller skate a lot in my youth on Taft Avenue, Manila. That's the reason there's always a skating area in all my SM malls. I want more people to share my love for skating.

When you were a kid, what was your original ambition?

I've always wanted to be a businessman. No other ambitions, I just wanted to be in business, even when I was a child in Fujian province, South China.

Why did you invest P7 billion in Mall of Asia's 500 outlets, 180 restaurants and other facilities, at a time when the Philippine economy is not that strong?

It's investment that manifests my strong confidence in the Philippine future. I hope this biggest mall project will have a positive impact on the Philippine economy and I hope to encourage other business people to invest, too. Not everything I do is purely for money. Of course, as a businessman and as head of publicly listed companies, we have to earn, but at this point in my life, there are other considerations more important besides just money. I took a risk and invested in SM Mall of Asia because I wanted to create something that could contribute to Philippine tourism growth. If I am only after profits, the easiest way is for me to construct high-rise condominiums here along the seashore facing Manila Bay, or I could just develop high-end subdivisions here and subdivide the lots to cash in quickly with big profits. But
constructing this mall is a long-term investment; it is proof of my faith in the future of the Philippine economy. I wanted to build a beautiful destination for
shopping, wholesome family-oriented entertainment and leisure. That church outside this mall, I donated it - everything from the structure, the land, to the interior furnishings and decor - it's not for profit.

What else do you wish to achieve after the SM Mall of Asia? What other big projects can we expect from you?

My biggest wish is for government, the private sector and all of us to work together to make the Philippines the best tourism destination in Southeast Asia. This is the reason I am always optimistic that the Philippines is not a hopeless case, contrary to what a lot of cynics claim. What Thailand can offer in tourism places and services, we in the Philippines can match, except for our past reputation in peace-and-order problems. That's what has held back our tourism growth. Philippine economic prospects are very good; we just have some problems in the investment environment which the government is now rectifying. Other export industries often rely on imported raw materials and the Philippines often only earns the labor input, but in the tourism industry, the Philippines can earn as much as 80 percent for every dollar spent here on food, shopping, entertainment, hotels, transport, etc., while 20
percent probably goes to imported liquor and other luxury goods. I'm into tourism with Tagaytay Highlands, Taal Vista Hotel. We shall keep investing in new tourist-friendly malls, we are now master-planning a new 5,700-hectare seaside tourism project called Hamilo Coast in Batangas, and many others.

Why do you think the Philippines is ideal for tourism?

First, there's the location: we are just two to three hours from all the major Asian cities like Singapore, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and others. Second, our people are famous for the best service in Southeast Asia. Third, people here are proficient in English. Fourth, the Philippines has many naturally beautiful tourist destinations, beaches, thousands of islands, unique flora and fauna, vast fishery
resources, and others. Fifth, the Philippines is excellent in entertainment, which is important in tourism. Look at the singers and bands in top hotels, from Shanghai to Seoul to Tokyo, many of them are Filipino entertainers. Sixth, you don't need much
capital or foreign investments for tourism development. Seventh, Philippine hospitality is better than others in ASEAN - just look at the people's smiling faces.

In our Chinese language, we call this ho khe chieng, or people who are warm and hospitable in welcoming clients and guests. There are many more advantages. I could spend all day and all night talking to you about the tourism potentials of this
country.

What are your suggestions on how to build up Philippine tourism?

I have a very simple formula based on common sense that will help accelerate Philippine tourism growth: the government should improve the peace-and-order situation as well as the international image of the Philippines on this crucial issue. The government should upgrade infrastructure, there should be a strong information campaign worldwide to promote the Philippines as an ideal tourism destination. In a recent event of HSBC, a TV talk show host of CNN asked for my advice to politicians and I shared only a few words of advice: work more, talk less.

Government every year claims over two million tourist arrivals. What do you think should be the ideal number of tourists coming to the Philippines annually?

Our target should first be to attract five million tourists in the first five years, then go for over 10 million in 10 years. Every time I meet President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, I always tell her this dream of mine and my excitement about Philippine tourism potentials because I know she really wants a better Philippine economy.

In this era of globalization, SM is also going international like the western multinationals Walmart, Carrefour, Metro and others. What are your plans in
China?

We have four major projects in China. In August or September this year, we shall inaugurate our new mall in Chengdu City, the capital of the 100-million-people Sichuan province. China is a dynamic place, it is amazing in progress.

Why is it that your children didn't grow up spoiled, and seem to have imbibed your work ethic and business acumen? How did you train them?

I think it's their innate natural drive. I also trained them in the importance of hard work. Even while they were in high school, my children used to spend their free time working at our SM Department Store in Makati.

Who among your six children - Tessie, Elizabeth, Henry Jr., Hans, Herbert and Harley - will become your future successor and the leader of the SM Group's next generation?

I cannot for now ascertain who will be the leader. We are organized as corporations, publicly listed firms. Whoever becomes the leader of the next generation shall rise based on merits and abilities. Unlike other top Chinese business families in Asia, which favor male sons over daughters, all my six children are treated equally. My eldest child Tessie is hardworking and very capable; it doesn't matter that she's a
woman. She always wants to learn and she is a fast learner.

A billionaire asked me recently who is richer, you or Lucio Tan?

How can I know for sure who is bigger in net worth when each person has his own strengths that not everyone fully appreciates? I don't like to say this guy is the biggest in wealth, because some people have wealth which is hidden - isn't that a fair point of view?

John Gokongwei Jr. told me that when he first applied for a loan with PBCom it was not approved, and it was China Bank's Dee K. Chiong and Dr. Albino SyCip who approved his first loan of P500,000 in 1950. What about your first loan?

I don't usually like to get loans. In fact, the reason why we did well and completed our first mall project, SM North Edsa, even after the 1983 economic crisis and after the Ninoy Aquino assassination, was because we had very little loans then. I got my first credit line in 1949, it was from China Bank and they lent me P1 million. My credit line was approved by Mr. Yap Tian Siang in their head office before at Juan Luna Street, corner Dasmarinas Street.

Did you ever imagine in 1949 that you would someday own more than 70 percent of China Bank, and that you would have Banco de Oro and soon, possibly, Equitable PCIBank?

No, I never imagined then that I would own banks. You know, despite our many shareholdings in China Bank, the Dee family of the original founder has managed the
institution so professionally and profitably, we never attempted to change the incumbent chairman Gilbert Dee or president Peter Dee. We are not that greedy, it's
not good. I don't believe in wanting both power and financial gain. Even those executives who have been with China Bank for many years, they are still there. If a venerable institution like China Bank is doing so well, why make changes?

Is it true you already own 11 percent of San Miguel Corporation?

I have invested a lot in that well-managed company, but I don't want to mention figures.

What are the business principles or strategies that made you successful?

I wouldn't classify this as a secret to success, but one of my lifelong practices is to pay my obligations on time, especially my suppliers. Even in my early years as retailer, I didn't delay my payments to suppliers, because I tell my kids that we have to be considerate to suppliers and think of their own hinyong or how they have to protect their sense of trustworthiness with others. If it's time to pay others on Monday, we would already deposit the money in their bank accounts on Friday, so they need not even come to our office to collect.

Your SM Cinemas do not allow R-18 or For Adults Only movies, including The Da Vinci Code. Are you a Catholic or is it just your wife?

I am Catholic, but yes, it's my wife Felicidad Tan Sy who is the most devout among us in the family. She devotes almost all her time and money to the Catholic
Church.

Your SM Group leases out or has retail businesses in millions of square meters of prime commercial space. When you came to the Philippines as a 12-year-old boy, how big was the sari-sari store of your father and what was its name?

It was a small ha-ya-tiam, it had no name. It was located on Echague St., which is now Carlos Palanca Sr. St. in Quiapo, Manila. It was only about 30 square meters in floor area.

Why did you cry when you first saw your father in his store?

I cried because I saw how hard the life of my father was as a small shopkeeper. He worked from early morning to late at night every day. He would go to chay-chi-khaw area or Divisoria to buy goods, carrying them himself on his back in order to resell in the store. I learned the importance of honest hard work, frugality and discipline from his example.

Where did you and your father sleep at night, on the second floor or at the back of the store?

Our sari-sari store was so small it had no back or second floor, we just slept on the counter late at night after the store was closed.

When you were a kid and you saw your father struggling with his sari-sari store, did that motivate you to aspire to become Southeast Asia's Shopping Mall King?

As a kid, I had the will to strive for excellence and to overcome the hard environment, but I never imagined attaining big success. Whatever I have achieved did
not happen overnight; ever since my teen years I've devoted many, many years of my life to non-stop studying, diligent work and dreaming of a better future.

Retail Business

Doing a business today is a big challenge because of recession. Many companies and businesses are tremendously affected. One of the example is AIG which is an insurance company has many clients and I am one of the customers that they have. I lost my big investment from them but I know this recession will not be forever. I am hoping that my small business will improve next year. I plan also to study more about business management and entrepreneurship to gain more knowledge and of course to have hands on my retail business by having knowledge I think I can improve my sales and earn more money. Unfortunately I have a very hectic schedule and no time to go to school; also the tuition fee is very expensive.

Learning about cash flow, inventory management, merchandising, internet marketing, customer service, retail management is the best way to gain more money out of your business if you are into retail business. A returning customer is where you could build your business not the first timer. But how can you do all these things? You need some mentor or company that can provide you with all of these topics to learn.

I found a website that is a retail consultant to anyone who wants to improve their sales like me. They have all the support that I need that is why I am glad I found them in the Internet. I search them in the search engine and right away I found them. I am luck I do not have to go to school anymore though I plan to study if not now maybe next year. Visit the website now and see for yourself maybe this is the website that you want to visit too. They have many information and services that I am mentioning earlier. I plan to know about customer service.

What More You Should Know About Zinc?

Zinc is not only important in prostate gland function and the growth of the reproductive organs.It also helps to prevent ACNE and regulate the activity of the oil glands. It is required for protein synthesis and collagen formation and promotes a healthy immune system and the healing of wounds. Zinc also allows acuity of taste and smell. It protects the liver from chemical damage and is vital for bone formation. Sufficient intake of zinc are needed to maintain the proper concentration of Vitamin E in the blood.

In addition zinc increases the absorption of Vitamin A deficiency of Zinc, may result of the senses of smell and taste. It can also cause finger nails to become
thin, peel and develop white spots. Other possible signs of zinc deficit include acne, delayed sexual maturation, fatigue, growth impairment, hair loss, high cholesterol levels, impaired night vision, impotence, increased susceptibility to infection, infertility, memory impairment, a propensity to diabetes, prostate trouble, recurrent colds and flu, skin lesions and slow wound healing.

You can find sources of zinc in brewer's yeast, egg yolk, fish, kelp. lamb, legumes, Lima beans, liver, meats, mushroom, oysters, pecans, poultry, pumpkin seeds and whole grains.

Herbs that contain zinc include alfalfa, cayenne, chamomile, dandelion, chickweed, fennel seed, milk thistle, parsley, rose hips, sage, sarsaparilla and wild yam.
Zinc levels may be lowered by diarrhea, kidney disease, cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes or the consumption of fiber, which causes zinc to be excreted through the intestinal tract.

A significant amount of zinc is also lost through perspiration. The consumption of hard water also affects the zinc level. Compounds called phytates found in grains
and legumes bind with zinc so that it cannot be absorbed. If you take both zinc and iron supplements, take them at different times. If this mineral are taken together, they interfere with one another. Do not take a total of more than 100 milligrams of zinc daily. If you take more than that it can depress your immune system but if you take less than 100 mgrams. supplement, it will enhance your immune system.

Baltimore Remodeling Contractor

Last year I decided to stay in my birthplace than moving to the big city because of the world recession that affects my housing budget. I already bought 200 square meters lot where I want to build my dream house but with the economic situation today I rather stay put in our old house than to take a risk and build my expensive dream house.

My brother told me that instead of building a new house why not remodel our existing house? He is right because by remodeling our old house I can save money and finance it to our small store. It is very hard to spend money today without budgeting because you will never know you might need more cash for the next month expenses. Remodeling your house can save money because you do not have to start building it from scratch but just change some parts of the house or add part like garage or patio if you do not have them right now. Remodeling your interior and exterior will improve the beauty of your house too.

Baltimore Remodeling Contractor can help you save money by presenting you their plan before you visit an architect. The contractor will do a total rehab to your house that will change it like the dream house that you want.

Emails Do's and Don't

My friend was a victim of internet fraud. His account was hacked and used by other person as their identity. You need not to be an expert in computer or in internet to protect your privacy but a little common sense.

Here are some tips on how to protect your privacy in the cyberworld:

1. If you are working in a company, don’t use your company emails account to send message to anyone. Use freebie account like yahoo, hotmail or gmail if it okay to your firms. If you will use public email account your private message will stay private to your employer. They are less or none seen all by your company.

2. If you are receiving group emails and the principal sender ask you to reply, remove the others before you response. This will protect their privacy and give them security.

3. If you are sending to a lot of people who does not know to each other, use Bcc instead of CC. A lot of spammers will collect email addresses on this. Bcc stands for Blind carbon copy.

4. Make your letters readable and with style. Making your paragraph using bold letters is annoying to your readers.

5. Clean forwarded emails when you receive one. Some of the original content are lost in the sea of comments.

6. Don’t forget to put an auto response when you are not in the office informing them that you are out and maybe in vacation. This will tell the person who sent emails to you that you are polite enough and will not wait for your response promptly.

I hope you get some tips here on how to use your email account.
By the way don’t click any link in your emails to divert you to other site especially when you are using your credit card online. They might be a hacker and will steal your personal information.

Some addtional Info about Vitamin C

Since the body cannot manufactured Vitamin C, it must be obtained through diet or supplements. Unfortunately, most of the Vitamin C consumed in the diet is lost in the urine.
For cancer, Vitamin C would be more effective when given intravenously rather than to take high doses orally and IV must be under the supervision of a physician. If you take aspirin regularly, use an esterified form of Vitamin C and take it separately from the aspirin. If aspirin and Vitamin C are taken together in large doses, stomach irritation can occur and could possibly lead to ulcer.

Diabetic medication such as diabenase or sulfa drugs may not be as effective if taken with Vitamin C. Taking high doses of vitamin C may cause a false- negative reading in tests for blood in the stool (guaiac test). Ester C is a remarkably effective form of Vitamin C especially for those suffering from chronic disease such as cancer,& AIDS.

Also Ester C is being incorporated in cosmetics as one of the
ingredients to prevent wrinkles. Avoid using chewable Vitamin C supplements, as these can damage tooth enamel.

Smoking causes a serious depletion of Vitamin C. Alcohol, analgesics (pain reliever meds), antidepressant, oral contraceptives, steroids, and anticoagulants may reduce the level of vitamin C in the body. I think most of you knows the sources of Vitamin C, so I don't have to mention it anymore.

No to wombs for rent

Recently BBC news (on Mozilla FireFox) featured the story of a mother who produced extra eggs (biological meaning) for deep-freeze, reasoning that she knew her grand daughter would be infertile (owing to something she lacked biologically) and wanted this granddaughter to have the option of pregnancy when the time came. No to wombs for rent as it became a USA source of money especially to wives whose husbands are working overseas as soldiers

The story provoked various reactions and the one I wish to quote here (because it corresponds with my own feelings) is that
1) it is possible for infertile women/couples to adopt babies/children who can give them as much joy as biological offspring would, and
2) a person or couple can lead full and happy lives with or without children.

Personally I cringed at the news because I think the grandmother had crossed an ethical line. As the Jews say, "Yahweh giveth and Yahweh taketh away, blessed be the name of Yahweh", meaning, God is creator, and though we are co-creators, there are limits to this.

Second, I do not wish to harp on the fact that centuries of colonialism has plundered our country of its natural resources, leaving poverty, destitution and a colonial mentality in its wake. But womb-renting as a way to make a living? It is too much convoluted and the ethics of it (sounds too close to body-renting which is what
prostituted women, and men, do; or to organ-selling, whether voluntary or coerced).

What I unequivocally object to is the com modification of a woman's life-giving abilities, reduced to for-rent status to the highest bidder. Jod, a person is integral, body, mind, spirit and pregnancy engages all of this in a woman--one doesn't just get pregnant, birth the baby and carry on as if nothing had happened. Gestation and pregnancy affect women in the most profound ways, some feel
fulfilled, others are hit with post-par tum depression. It is cruel to subject women to bearing life in their bodies they will have nothing to do with ever after, even if it is their own decision. Wombs-for-rent is not simply an issue of informed consent, it goes much deeper than that.

Finally, just because surrogate motherhood is, in fact, a reality in many places does not mean we should trade in it. Because we live in a capitalist world, there always is the possibility of surrogate motherhood (any good or service for the right price) but I think, there should at least be discussion and debate on the full
implications of this on individual women, on couples (what does spouse say?), on families, on communities, on generations of women.

Sorry, that was a mouthful but I do not think gestation and pregnancy should be among the goods and services ready to hand in this capitalist world, or any world for that matter. (And I haven't even discussed patriarchy yet.)

Facts on Venereal Diseases-Gonorrhea and Syphilis

Your question was quite amusing. There's no food contraindicated if you have contracted gonorrhea neither to prevent venereal disease. To avoid venereal disease is to refrain having sex with someone you don't know profoundly well. You can only have venereal disease if someone you had sex with has it. Gonorrhea can be treated by injection ceftriaxone 250 mg. intramascular. Even if you have been
treated and you resume having sex to someone who has it and was never treated you're going to get it back again. It's easy for men to recognize if they have such problem because of the symptoms, they're sure to seek medical help.

For syhpilis, it's entirely different. You can have it without knowing it.You might have just a flu symptoms and it goes away. With syphilis it can be diagnose only through blood test. Your infection can be determined if you have it for a long time through the titer. For treatment you receive 3 injections of benzathine Penicillin 2.5 million units intramasuclar. The needle is very long and the substance is milky and sticky. You need one injection every week till you complete the 3 series of injections. If you miss one injection, you have to start all over again.

One think with syphilis if it remains undiagnosed and not treated it could go to your brain and you end up with dementia. It can also damage your heart, your joints and so many parts of the body. One study done long time ago in our clinic and in Japan that syphilis is precursor to AIDS. Through my clinical experience as my Specialty was on all sexually transmitted disease (meaning all tests results positive to STDS were given to my attention and I communicate with the patient for
appointment to be treated and given counseling to encourage partners to get treated and coordinate with the Department of Health - for those who didn't keep appointment for follow up), I found out that those with high titer of syphilis when tested for HIV they were also positive.

Sometimes when you have rashes on your palms, body or sole on your feet, it is best
to have a VDRL test for syphilis as at times that could be an indication that you have syphilis. Just be cautious whom you are sleeping with. Take good care of your pecker. Trying to prove your carnal prowess would end up with disaster which could
means death sentence when you end up with HIV/AIDS. I hope I gave you a satisfying answer.

Las Vegas Shows

We call Las Vegas as the Sin City of the world maybe because the Casino and other forms of entertainment are there. You can see the glittering bulbs in the night and all those big logos like Casinos, Bars and etc. What I like about Las Vegas is that you can relax while doing a bar tripping or Casino hopping. I like playing slot machine than any other games. My advice to everyone who wants to visit Las Vegas is that not to play seriously. I think it is better to watch Las Vegas Shows because they are more entertaining and you will be thrilled and entertained.

There are many shows that you can choose like for example if you want to hear and see Elton John then buy tickets for your family. By the way, buy tickets in advance because most of the shows are fully book when the date comes for the premier show. Do not miss these best entertainments in Las Vegas. You can also tour yourself to Grand Canyon or maybe you want to experience the Colorado River Rafting. As I told you there are many things that you can make them happen in Las Vegas. Bring your whole family and explore Las Vegas, the best city in the world in terms of entertainment.

Random Callers

Harassment is not only happening face to face but though telephone too. I have received many annoying calls from unknown people in our telephone accusing me of things that I do not know. Some of them are offering phone sex. I just thought maybe these people are crazy or they have nothing to do but make fun of innocent people like me. I usually received their calls during the night when I am in my deep sleep and you know when you answer telephone call during such time, you will be afraid and bothered. All you can to is to know who calls you during such late hour in the night. I filed a Caller Complaints to our local telephone company and asked them if they could provide me the list of those annoying callers in my telephone but until now I did not receive any information from them. I do not know if they want to protect those criminals thinking that they are also subscribers in their telephone company.

I just want to reprimand these people to mind their own business. If they will not stop from harassing me then I will sue them to the court. Right now I plan to ask help from caller wiki because they can trace the telephone numbers of these people, the addresses, Telephone Company and their names.

Tulsa Roofing

One of the most important parts of the house is the roof because it will protect your house from rain. To avoid future expenses in your house repair, it is better to repair or replace your present leaky roof with a new and best roof today. It might be more expensive to replace your roof but in the long run you will save money. My advice is to find a roofer specialist who has been for a long time in this field. Some roofers today to be honest are crook so be sure to find someone who has a good reputation in roofing and honest. Get a referral from your friend who has a roofer friend or from someone who replaced his home’s roof by a good roofer.

My friend’s Tulsa Roofing experience was really fascinating because she was able to change her ugly roof that has moss already. Aside from moss, the roof has many holes that some parts of her kitchen area are decaying because the water oozed when there is rain during storm or rainy season. This roofer from Tulsa has been in the roofing service for 25 years so you can be sure of good service quality. They specialize in residential and commercial re-roofs.

High Tech Security Gadgets

Living in the city is different from living in the farm or in the rural area in terms of many things. One of the differences is that you can trust your neighbor in the farm than in the city in terms of being trustworthy. Last week I saw in the television that a house in a subdivision was ransacked and all expensive jewelries and money were stolen. It is really hard to trust people today not because of the recession but I think stealing is rampant in the city than in the rural area.

To solve this problem I think you need to have a home security gadgets that will intimidate these crook people. If these criminal knows that you have high tech security gadgets, they will stay away from your house. Another thing is that if they do not know, you will still caught them on camera and believe me most of these burglars are your neighbors.

The Cat

When we transfer to the new house, I notice that there is a cat living in the hole with her kittens. I told my other housemates to let her stay because of the kittens but this morning we lost some of our viands and foods so they decided to catch the cat but I told them if we catch it and throw it away the kittens will die and this will be a big problem because we could not get them inside the hollow small place. When they die it will smell bad.

I just told them to be patient and wait the time that these kittens are big enough and can walk. Many beautiful cats here are living and eating foods in the garbage. I love cats and other animals. In the Philippines we have many pets that we always buy foods for them. Let us love these less fortunate animals as we love human beings. They will give you unconditional love.

Hawaii Web Design

Web designing is very important if you are to open an online business. Like for example if your online business is about money and finance, you should choose a plate that will look professional and not a funny theme plate that will look cheap like a teenager theme plate. But you know even if your website is very beautiful, there are still many things to consider if you want to earn money in your online business like letting the World Wide Web that you exist. How about traffic to get potential buyers? Even if you have the most beautiful website but nobody knows about it then it will be a waste of time because visitors are the one that will bring money to your pocket.

At Hawaii Design you will have all the service that you need if you want to have an online business. They will make your appropriate website and then they will help you drive traffic to your website using Search Engine Optimization.

Just buy enough foods

Lately I am out of control. I threw away some foods that I bought because they became spoiled before I could eat them all. Our fridge is small that it could not accumulate to four of us. I never learned my lesson about this, buying and going to the groceries without a budget list on what to buy in a week.

The best thing to do is make a list on what foods to buy because it will save time and money. Just make a list that you can eat in a week and if the stores are near in your home then there is no need to buy frozen foods in volumes like fish and meat. You can also buy vegetables in small quantity because you can not eat much of it in a week and they will get spoiled and all you can do is to throw them away so you will waste money on it. You can buy dried products in volume because these are foods that will not be spoiled easily like rice, noodles, dried bean seeds and can goods like salmon and fruits in cans. Local fruits are cheap if they are on season like watermelon, they are cheap when many vendors sell them.

Dresses and other wears should be bought occasionally, maybe twice a year is OK and do it off season like for winter suite you buy them during summer because at that time they are cheap while for summer wear buy them on winter and you can save more money.

Single Parent

Raising a child or perhaps children is very hard to do if you are a single parent. Most of the single parents have the hard time raising the children because aside from raising them, they will need to find a work to support the children. My sister is a single parent to her son; believe me raising a child without the help from the father is very hard. It is hard for a mother because the son needs a father figure. Finding other single parents is the best way to do so that you can seek advice from them on how to raise a child perfectly. Unfortunately single parent in our place are very few and in fact people does not accept them as normal but a shame to the community.

The last thing that we do to help her is by Internet. Searching in the Internet is not easy but we never surrender until we found single parent chat rooms which we suggest her to join and chat with the other members. The website is free when you join and in fact there many members already. The site offer webcam capability, voice and texting chat. Most of the members are single parents with different problem and some of them are in their senior years who gave many good advice on how to raise a child or children alone.

How to age gracefully?

The greatest happiness usually comes not in youth, but in old age. Studies show that men generally are happiest during their middle sixties, women
during their seventies. Unhappiest time: Early fifties for men, late forties for women.

Intelligence doesn't necessarily decline with age and neither does an individual
learning ability. Crystallized intelligence-the ability to make judgments and solve
problems by using one's accumulated information-actually increases over the years. Memory loss due to age is usually confined to unimportant matters, such as phone numbers. The key factor is mental alertness. People who stay socially and mentally active suffer no decline in mental powers.

Best HVAC Company

Our simulation systems in the military in Middle East are very sensitive in temperature that we need to maintain the inside temperature range between 61ºF to 79ºF. One time our HVAC has a leak and the temperature went up to almost 100ºF that we were forced to turn off one of the systems because aside from high temperature the humidity went very dry and all the systems require that the range is from 30 to 70. Because of these requirements we made it sure that the HVAC we were using are the best.

The vendors of the Bradley Tank Simulations used Phoenix HVAC from United States and honestly these HVAC’s are very durable and they served the systems for more than five years before they started to be defective. The contractors from Phoenix HVAC were very good in their field and in fact they showed us their certificate as HVAC Technicians. They will not just install the HVAC but calculate the room to determine the capacity of the HVAC that they will install. In this way you will not spend much extra money in your business. Protecting your investment is the first thing that you should do like for example if the HVAC are very durable and will last long before it starts to be defective. Of course less maintenance less money spend and more saving to your business.

Healthy Habits that could prevent Impotence Problem

impotence or erectile dysfunction
Impotence or erectile dysfunction are quite common among men but they hesitate to consult their Doctors for treatment as they feel uncomfortable to discuss this problem. A good reason that they should discuss this matter to their Doctors it's because impotence can be a sign of serious illness.

Any disorder that impairs blood flow to the penis can play a role, including diabetes, hardening of the arteries and high blood pressure. Fatigue, smoking, medication side effects or excessive alcohol or cocaine use can also cause impotence, as can hormonal disorders, and nerve damage from trauma or prostate, bladder or colon surgeries.

When you go and see your Doctor most likely the focus of the examination is on the penis, testicles and prostate gland. A test for diabetes or some hormones to check for an imbalance. If it's the hormone testosterone that's giving the problem, testosterone injection of 200 mg. given intramuscular either every week or every 2 weeks as per Doctor's advise. This is a controlled substance and sticky solution. Big needle is needed but not to worry with the injection. A competent Nurse will
not give you pain for the injection.

Here are simple tactics to try to minimize impotent problems:

1.0 Cut down on alcohol. Too much alcohol, a nervous system stimulant,
can result temporary impotence
2.0 Keep your cholesterol in check. Studies showed, men with high
cholesterol are also at risk of impotence.
3.0 Quit Smoking - The habit leads to atherosclerosis, which decreases
blood flow to smaller blood vessels, such as those in the penis. This
can affect your ability to maintain an erection.
4.0 Exercise regularly such as brisk walking,& dancing. Research suggests
that daily exercise that burns 200 calories can significantly reduce your
risk for impotence.

Let's take a look on some medical options that can be beneficial to you
guys:

Viagra- This medication helps to open penile arteries, allowing for improved blood flow to the penis, when taken about an hour before intercourse.

Penile Injections such as Caverject or Edex- they are injected into the penis before intercourse to boost blood flow to produce an erection.

Penile Suppositories- (MUSE), Alprostadil pellets can be inserted into the tip of the penis to produce an erection. Studies found MUSE had helped 70% of men who were impotent as a result of prostate-removal surgery.

Support Sleeve- A semi-rigid rubber support sheath fits around the penis to maintain an erection for intercourse.

Construction Bands- These adjustable latex bands are useful for men who can't trap blood in their penises. The band is placed around the base of the penis, preventing blood from flowing out and helping to maintain an erection. Caution though- be sure your partner is not allergic to latex, otherwise it would be a tragedy instead of sublime pleasure.

As what someone had mentioned to me " there's so many ways to skin
a cat".

Nothing is hopeless Guys- Just Consult your Doctor. Modern Medicine
of Today can do wonders.

Understanding Depression

"I felt detached from the world around me. All emotions “ love, affection, anger“ were gone. Actually, I can't say I had no emotions, I did, but they all seemed desperately negative. Most involved fear. Fear that I would never escape the condition."

"I was so scared of being alone with my thoughts. At night, everything seemed so bleak. I couldn't concentrate on anything; I couldn't read or watch TV. I couldn't relax or unwind. Sleep seemed impossible “ so many thoughts were racing through my mind. I would spend hours fantasizing about ways of killing myself."

"Everything to do with everyday life seemed like such hard work. I simply didn't have the energy to go to work, to see friends, to shop, cook or clean. It all seemed pointless! What was the point in eating, when I didn't even want to be alive?"

This booklet describes the symptoms of depression and the different kinds of treatment available. It suggests ways that people can help themselves, and what family and friends can do. It also tells you where to find further advice and information.

If you are depressed, you may feel that nothing can help. But this is untrue. Deciding to do something is the most important step you can take. Most people recover from bouts of depression, and some even look back on it as a useful experience, which forced them to take stock of their lives and make changes in their lifestyle.

What is depression?

We often use the expression "I'm feeling depressed" when we're feeling sad or miserable about life. Usually, these feelings pass in due course. But, if the feelings are interfering with your life and don't go away after a couple of weeks, or if they come back, over and over again, for a few days at a time, it could be a sign that you're depressed in the medical sense of the term.

In its mildest form, depression can mean just being in low spirits. It doesn't stop you leading your normal life, but makes everything harder to do and seem less worthwhile. At its most severe, major depression (clinical depression) can be life-threatening, because it can make people suicidal or simply give up the will to live.

There are also various specific forms of depression:

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
If you usually become depressed only during the autumn and winter, it could be due to not getting enough daylight. You may benefit from spending time sitting in front of a special light box.

Postnatal depression
Many mothers have ‘the baby blues™ soon after the birth of their baby, but it usually passes after a few days. Postnatal depression is a more serious problem and can appear any time between two weeks and two years after the birth.

Bipolar disorder (Manic depression)
Some people have mood swings, when periods of depression alternate with periods of mania. When manic, they are in a state of high excitement, and may plan and may try to execute grandiose schemes and ideas. At least one person in every six becomes depressed in the course of their lives. One in 20 is clinically depressed. Figures suggest that more women become depressed, but men may find it harder to admit to or talk about. All age groups can be affected, and its important to take symptoms seriously and not to dismiss them as an inevitable part of growing up or growing old. By recognizing and treating the symptoms, and getting help, its possible to overcome depression, and prevent it coming back.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Depression shows up in many different ways. People don't always realize what's going on, because their problems seem to be physical, not mental. They tell themselves they're simply under the weather or feeling tired. But, if you tick off five or more of the following symptoms, it's likely you're depressed.

* being restless and agitated
* waking up early, having difficulty sleeping, or sleeping more
* feeling tired and lacking energy; doing less and less
* using more tobacco, alcohol or other drugs than usual
* not eating properly and losing or putting on weight
* crying a lot
* difficulty remembering things
* physical aches and pains with no physical cause
* feeling low-spirited for much of the time, every day
* being unusually irritable or impatient
* getting no pleasure out of life or what you usually enjoy
* losing interest in your sex life
* finding it hard to concentrate or make decisions
* blaming yourself and feeling unnecessarily guilty about things
* lacking self-confidence and self-esteem
* being preoccupied with negative thoughts
* feeling numb, empty and despairing
* feeling helpless
* distancing yourself from others; not asking for support
* taking a bleak, pessimistic view of the future
* experiencing a sense of unreality
* self-harming (by cutting yourself, for example)
* thinking about suicide.

Anxiety
People who are depressed are often very anxious. It's not clear whether the anxiety leads into the depression or whether the depression causes the anxiety. A person feeling anxious may have a mind full of busy, repetitive thoughts, which make it hard to concentrate, relax, or sleep. They may have physical symptoms, such as headaches, aching muscles, sweating and dizziness. It may cause physical exhaustion and general ill health.

What causes depression?

There's no one cause of depression; it varies very much from person to person and can happen for a combination of factors. Although depression, as such, doesn't seem to be inherited through the genes (with the possible exception of manic depression), some of us are more prone to depression than others. This could be because of the way we're made, or because of our experiences or family background.

Past experiences can have a profound effect on how we feel about ourselves in the present, and if those feelings are very negative, they can be the start of a downward spiral. In many cases, the first time someone becomes depressed, it's triggered by an unwelcome or traumatic event, such as being sacked, divorced, physically attacked or raped.

Depression is seen by some experts as a form of unfinished mourning. Often events or experiences that trigger depression can also be seen as a loss of some kind. It could be following the actual death of someone close, a major life change (such as moving house or changing jobs) or simply moving from one phase of life into another, as we reach retirement or our children leave home. Its not just the negative experience that causes the depression, but how we deal with it. If the feelings provoked are not expressed or explored at the time, they fester and contribute towards depression. It's important to acknowledge and grieve over what we have lost in order to be able to move on successfully.

Depression may also be caused by an under-active thyroid. The thyroid gland controls metabolic rate and, if it is not working properly, can cause you to experience various symptoms. If it is under-active, you will feel sluggish and lethargic, may put on weight, and feel depressed. If it is overactive, you may feel very speed up, lose weight and have symptoms similar to mania. It is important to have a thyroid function test (a simple blood test) to make sure that this is not the cause of your depression, especially if you cannot account for it in other ways, such as recent life events. If an under-active thyroid is diagnosed, it can be treated successfully with appropriate medication.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that occasionally people become very depressed in response to certain foods. Such a reaction is very individual, and people are often not aware of the particular food substance or drink that is causing the problem. But if you suddenly feel depressed for no apparent reason, it may be worth considering whether you have eaten or drunk something new, and whether this might have caused your sudden change of mood. If this is the cause, your mood should lift very quickly, so long as you don't consume any more of the particular item.

Poor diet, lack of physical fitness, and illnesses, such as flu, can all leave us feeling depressed. Frequent use of some recreational drugs can also play a part.

It's clear that people who are depressed show changes to the chemical messengers (called neurotransmitters) in the brain. It's less clear whether this is a cause or a result of the depression.

What can I do to help myself?

Depression has one major characteristic that you need to be aware of when thinking about what you can do to defeat it. It can feed on itself. In other words, you get depressed and then you get more depressed about being depressed. Negative thoughts become automatic and are difficult for you to challenge. Being in a state of depression can then, itself, become a bigger problem than the difficulties that caused it in the first place. You need to break the hold that the depression has on you.

An important thing to remember is that there are no instant solutions to problems in life. Solving problems involves time, energy and work. When you are feeling depressed, you may well not be feeling energetic or motivated to work. But if you are able to take an active part in your treatment, it should help your situation.

Fighting negative attitudes
Try to recognize the pattern of negative thinking when you are doing it, and replace it with a more constructive activity. Look for things to do that occupy your mind.

Activity is good for the mind
Although you may not feel like it, its very therapeutic to take part in physical activities, for 20 minutes a day. Playing sports, running, dancing, cycling, and even brisk walking can stimulate chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which can help you to feel better.

Caring for yourself
You need to do things that will improve the way you feel about yourself. Allow yourself positive experiences and treats that reinforce the idea that you deserve good things. Pay attention to your personal appearance. Set yourself goals that you can achieve and that will give you a sense of satisfaction.

Look after yourself by eating healthily. Oily fish, in particular, may help alleviate depression. Don't abuse your body with tobacco, alcohol or other drugs, which make it worse.

Alternative and complementary therapies
Practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine concern themselves with the person as a whole, and don't merely treat their symptoms. They can take more time with you than a GP can.

Practitioners may offer treatments such as acupuncture, massage, homeopathy and herbal medicine that many people with depression have found helpful. St John's Wort is one of the herbal remedies that have become very popular, and may help to lift your mood. But if you are already taking other medication, it may not be safe to combine them. Consult your pharmacist or GP for more information.

Self-help groups
It can be a great relief to meet and share experiences with other people who are going through the same thing you are. It can break down feelings of isolation and, at the same time, show you how other people have coped. Finding that you can support others can help you, too.

These groups are often led by people who have overcome depression themselves. For help in locating local self-help groups, talk to your GP .

What treatments are available?

At a time when you may well find making decisions difficult, it can also seem like an added burden to try and choose between a range of treatment options.

What is actually available to you may depend very much on where you live. For example, talking treatments, such as counseling and psychotherapy, are more readily available in London and the South-East than they are in rural areas of northern England. You should be able to choose freely among a range of treatment options, but, in practice, most people attending GP surgeries are offered antidepressants as the first treatment choice. Don't be afraid to ask your GP about the treatments offered and what the alternatives are.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published guidelines on the treatment of depression, in December 2004. These suggest that, for mild depression, antidepressants are not appropriate because the hazards outweigh the benefits. Suggested treatments include watchful waiting “ a recognition of the fact that depression often goes away without treatment“ guided self-help, short-term talking treatments such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), and exercise programmes. For more severe depression antidepressants are appropriate, and selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI)s are suggested because their side effects are usually better tolerated than those of the alternative types of antidepressants. However, combining a psychological treatment with medication maybe the most effective course for severe depression.

Antidepressants
Antidepressant drugs are the most common medical treatment for depression. They work on chemical messengers in the brain to lift your mood. They can't cure depression, but they can alleviate the symptoms so that you may feel able to take action to deal with the depression yourself. It often takes between two to four weeks before the drugs take effect. The usual recommendation is that you stay on them for six months in order to prevent a recurrence. They don't work for everyone.

Antidepressants frequently cause unpleasant side effects, which are worse to begin with. Some can be dangerous when used with other drugs. Of the various different types available, SSRIs are usually the preferred first choice because, although they have as many listed side effects as older drugs, they are usually better tolerated. Others include tricyclic antidepressants and MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors). Whichever type of antidepressant you take, you may experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking them, especially if you have been taking them for some time. Because of this you should withdraw slowly, reducing the dose in stages over a period of weeks.

Psychological treatments
Your GP may offer you one of the following psychological treatments. The choice will depend on what's available, your own preferences, how severe your depression is and other factors:

* Five or six sessions of problem-solving therapy can help people break down their problems into manageable portions and provides strategies for coping with them.
* Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) helps to identify and change negative thoughts and feelings affecting behaviour and may last up to 12 months. Computerized CBT (CCBT) is now available and can be used in addition to or instead of sessions with a therapist. It is not suitable for someone with severe symptoms though, and NICE recommend individuals are assessed before using one of the programmes.
* Guided self-help delivers a six to eight week therapy programme through self-help books, under the guidance of a health care professional.
* Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) focuses on relationships. Therapy can continue for 6 to 12 months.
* Counseling can be short- or long-term. It involves talking with someone who is trained to listen with empathy and acceptance. This allows you to express your feelings and find your own solutions to your problems.

Psychotherapy is not usually available on the NHS. It is more frequent and intensive than counseling, and goes more deeply into childhood experience and significant relationships. Most psychotherapists work in private practice.

Painful experiences are hard to talk about, but health care professionals understand this. Be as frank as possible, so that people can offer you the best help. Don't be afraid to ask questions about your condition.

Befriending schemes
Your GP may put you in touch with a local befriending scheme with trained volunteers who could visit, weekly, to give you practical advice, support and a sympathetic ear.

What if my depression is worse, or won't go away?

Your GP may refer you to a specialist mental heath professional, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist or mental health nurse, who can review your treatment so far. They may suggest a different medication, or a combination of drugs or of treatments. Medication combined with psychological treatments seems to be the most effective way of dealing with severe or long-lasting depression.

You may need support to live independently, in the community. The Care Programme Approach aims to ensure that you are assessed and that the right services are provided for you by social services and the health authorities. You should be allocated a care coordinator to be responsible for this. You should be given an advance directive, which is a written treatment plan that also specifies which treatments you would prefer not to have.

Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) are often the most easily accessible service for people with mental health problems. They can provide support for people living in their own homes. The CMHTs are multi-disciplinary teams, which may include a psychiatrist, community psychiatric nurses (CPNs), social workers and support workers, among others.

Hospital admission
If you are severely depressed, you may need the shelter and protection offered by the psychiatric ward of a hospital. It also gives a psychiatrist the opportunity to monitor the effects of different treatments. Hospital can provide a safe and supportive environment if you are in a state of distress, and it may be comforting to have other people around you and to know that you are being cared for.

However, it can be distressing to be on a ward where you have little privacy, where you have to fit in to routines that may not suit you, and where you may be upset by the behaviour of other patients. Generally, doctors want to keep patients out of hospital, but some patients are compulsorily detained, if it's thought to be necessary, for their own health or safety or the protection of others.

Crisis resolution services
These are teams of doctors and nurses who provide intensive support, which will enable you to stay at home if you're in crisis, rather than going into hospital. This service is not yet available countrywide.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
This is a controversial treatment, usually offered only when people who are severely depressed haven't responded to drug treatment. It involves passing an electric current through the brain, while you are under general anaesthetic. The resulting convulsion may alleviate the depression, but can also have severe side effects, including memory loss.

What can friends or relatives do to help?

The very nature of depression, which brings a sense of hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness, can prevent someone who's depressed from seeking help. They often withdraw from friends and relatives around them, rather than asking for help or support. However, this is a time when they need your help and support most. Perhaps the most important thing that you can do is to encourage your friend or relative to seek appropriate treatment.

Try not to blame them for being depressed, or tell them to "pull themselves together". They are probably already blaming themselves, and criticism is likely to make them feel even more depressed. Praise is much more effective than criticism. You can reassure them that it is possible to do something to improve their situation, but you need to do so in a caring and sympathetic way.

People who are depressed need someone who cares for them. You can show that you care by listening, sympathetically, by being affectionate, by appreciating the person, or simply by spending time with them. You can help by encouraging them to talk about how they are feeling and getting them to work out what they can do, or what they need to change, in order to deal with their depression.

If the person you are supporting is severely depressed, you may be faced with some hard decisions about how much to do on their behalf. If, for example, they are not looking after their physical needs, should you take over and do the shopping, cooking and cleaning for them, if you are able to? Or should you try and encourage them to do it? There are no easy answers to this situation. It will help if you can find someone with whom you can discuss these and other issues.

Supporting a friend or relative who is depressed can be an opportunity to build a closer and more satisfying relationship. However, it can also be hard work and frustrating, at times. Unless you pay attention to your own needs, it can make you feel depressed, too. Try and share the responsibility with as many people as possible, and find people to whom you can express your frustrations. There may be a local support group of others in your situation. You could also talk to your GP or another health care professional about getting help for yourself and your family.
